Extension

Extension service is one of the triadic functions of the University. In fact, it has become a criterion-component of accreditation. The University is not only accredited on the basis of its excellence in teaching and research functions but also of its service to the community. In recognition of the vital role of community extension services in the life of University, a task force on Community Extension Programs and services was organized.
The Jose Rizal Memorial State University-Katipunan Campus, just like any institution of higher learning shares in the responsibility to actively participate or undertake in any programs, projects and activities that would contribute to the countryside development of the region. Jose Rizal Memorial State University – Katipunan Campus continues as an active tandem of the local government of Katipunan and its far-flung barangays in responding the needs of its people.
The following are the different extension programs conducted by the JRMSU – Katipunan Campus to its clientele:



Alamag Program

Alamag is the flagship of Information Technology Department in JRMSU – Katipunan Campus. Alamag in Cebuano dialect means the know-how. The technical knowledge and skill required to do something. The aim of the project is to eradicate computer illiteracy and combat the digital divide, in the community of Katipunan and the province of Zamboanga del Norte. The project will help the beneficiaries adapt information technology and use it as a tool for communication and employment. Hence, increase their employability; attain greater earning potential and greater access to resources. The project was started in 2007 and had served nine (9) barangays in Katipunan and still continues to fulfill its goal.


BOLT Program

Business Opportunities and Livelihood Training (BOLT) Program is a livelihood training program that provides skills training to the participants at the same time giving them insights on possible business opportunities that they will endeavor after the training. The skills training include food and beverage with table skirting, food processing, commercial cooking and basic baking and cake decorating.
The objective of the project is to equip beneficiaries with adequate technical skills and knowledge about the industry which they might plan to invest. This program is a catalyst for the women to establish a business of their own that could augment their household income. It is through this project the women could contribute to their community and to the growth of the country as a whole.


Gk (Gawad Kalinga) Sibol Program

The GK (Gawad Kalinga) SIBOL Program focuses on listening; speaking, reading and writing. This program nurtures and develops SIBOL Learners through an age-specific, value-based program that helps them reach their fullest potential. It is a community-based program that envisions the child to be imbued with positive Filipino values and to be academically prepared for formal schooling. It specifically aims to:

  1. Producing the sounds of letters.
  2. Matching the sounds to its corresponding letters.
  3. Expose the preschoolers’ with phonetic spelling.
  4. Develop skills of reading by associating pictures and images with figures and symbols using the state of the Art Technology.
  5. Provide a variety of experiences in writing, speaking and listening by adopting the Developmental Approach.
  6. Provide the children with opportunities for practicing specific speaking skills.
  7. Improve listening skills by giving opportunities for careful and focused listening.
  8. Give opportunities for collaboration in order to foster communication competence.
  9. Donate school supplies, certificates, and ribbons for academic awards.
  10. Volunteer for any of the sub-programs under child youth development.
  11. Conduct feeding.

Values Formation Program

Values Formation program serves as springboard for better and more sustainable programs and projects in order to alleviate the Subanen indigenous people. Its role as development catalyst is to initiate, sustain and collaborate developmental activities to its members to share God’s given gift to the less fortunate ones in the society. In order for our community to grow, their proper values should manifest. Embedded in character education are guidelines for successful living. The language of respect and responsibility navigates the journey to ethical fitness. Children explore education as life and life as learning positive approaches for setting and achieving goals.
The long term activities of this program include values formation with integration of christian, Filipino and other moral and social values; retreats and recollection; leadership training; weekly/monthly center meeting; immersion and exposure trips; opportunity ministries; outreach projects/ medical mission; pamaskong handog gift giving (christmas package drive); non-formal education and environmental awareness.


Dental Service’s Program

The goal of this program is to provide free dental care to the indigenous subanen people in Barangay Miatan, Katipunan, Zamboanga del Norte and to its neighboring barangays. The activity focuses on oral hygiene by providing medical treatment as well as education and supplies for hygiene maintenance. Its program of work includes:

  1. Dental services (tooth extraction) performed by Dipolog Dental Association – Dipolog Chapter (Dr. Jay E. Perey, Dr. Rosalie L. Lacaya, Dr. Candelaria C. Jeralve, and Dr.Gerald M. Abalos)
  2. Provide medicines for common illnesses and vitamins (as prescribed by the doctors).
  3. Provide anesthesia for minor surgeries and tooth extraction; and medical supplies such as syringes, surgical gloves, face masks, alcohol, gauze, plaster, betadine, etc.
  4. Giving of Toothbrushes and toothpaste as sponsored by Unique product.

Coastal Clean-Up And Environmental Awareness Drive

The College of Education Extension Office is grounded in its commitment to render service to the community with a framework of action that enhances a culture of service for coastal barangays to immense themselves as initiators in fostering a clean and debris – free environment advocacy. These initiatives involved clean-up activities of the coastlines, segregation of household wastes, informal meetings with the households on environmental awareness and mitigating climate change as individual’s concern and responsibility, embracing alternative livelihood programs, health and nutrition, family planning and responsible parenthood. Furthermore, the college actively spearheaded the institution’s celebration every month of September as the Math and Science Month. One of the highlighted activities is the Coastal Clean-Up Drive with a theme “Buhayin at Ipaglaban Malinis na Katubigan ng Bayan” jointly supportive by the faculty, the students and barangay officials and residents.
The college extension activities on coastal clean-up and environmental awareness drive program is focused to accomplish the following objectives:

  1. Refocus the mindsets of people towards the protection of the environment.
  2. Intensify and strengthen the public awareness on climate change.
  3. Provide extensive dissemination of hygiene and sanitation.
  4. Conduct coastal clean-up drive in the coastal area of Barangay Dos, Katipunan, Zamboanga del Norte including the market’s fish vendors place.
  5. Facilitate training through lectures and workshops on solid waste management.
  6. Participate in the formulation of barangay policies on mangroves conservation.

Tulong Pangkabuhayan Program

The Tulong Pangkabuhayan Program is the latest extension program of the College of Education implemented in the last quarter of CY 2014. The first beneficiary of this program is the members of the Indigenous People Council in Siari, Sindangan, Zamboanga del Norte. They will be trained to join this advocacy by weaving a “bayong”, “banig”, “basket”, “pay-pay” out of their raw materials such as the “romblon”, “buli’, “uway” and “nito” which are abundant in their locality.
The project aims to create sustainable livelihood sources among the Indigenous People Council members out of their finish products which will be sold in the market. It also aims to develop each member into skills that can help to generate income, and to train the members in basic financial management skills, skills of mobilization and resource management for future in their respective.


Coconut Seed Dispersal Program (CSDP)

The Coconut Seed Dispersal Program (CSDP) is an extension program of the Jose Rizal memorial State University (JRMSU) implemented by the College of Agriculture of Katipunan Campus in partnership with the Philippine Coconut Authority (PCA). This program aims to address the need to increase coconut production and farm productivity of the farmers in the Second District of the Province of Zamboanga del Norte. The campus is set to supply 50,000 coconut seedlings needed by the coconut farmers in their replanting.

This program was launched last June 2013 and still on-going. The campus has supplied coconut seedlings to more than 200 farmers.


Katipunan Rural Development Program Mobilizing Technological Innovation on Agriculture (KARUMATA)

Katipunan Rural Development Program Mobilizing Technological Innovation on Agriculture (KARUMATA) is a long term sustainable development program conceptualized by the College of Agriculture extension program which aims to provide a show window of all advancements of technology in the field of agriculture. Through this program, matured technical know-how, tested knowledge and findings from different researches of the institution which believed to be applicable at village level will be mobilized to responsive and receptive respondents of the community.

The program comprises of different programs that includes values formation, capability building, lectures, trainings, demonstrations, dispersal program and educational tours. It will be conducted by the respective instructors of the college who are recognized in their field of specialization every Wednesday of the week.

The program was launched last December 10, 2013 and still on-going.


Agency Working for Sustainability of Miatan Environs (A.W.S.O.M.E.) Project

July 2012-August 2013

Forty-nine (49) grateful farmers of Barangay Miatan, Katipunan, Zamboanga del Norte were respondents of the AWSOME extension program was conducted by no less than the faculty members of the JRMSU-Katipunan College of Agriculture who are experts in the different areas in agriculture such as crop, animal and soil sciences as well as agricultural business and marketing. This program was initiated in order to upgrade the knowledge of farmer respondents to keep them abreast with the latest technology in agricultural production and to enable them to be competitive in the industry. The Program was launched last July 2012 and culminated last August 2013.

Phase one of the program was composed of trainings, seminars and workshops of different topics about agriculture, specifically:

A. Cassava Production, Processing and Utilization
B. Rubber Establishment
C. Fruit & Plantation Crop Establishment
D. Vegetable Production
E. Contour Framing/Harvesting/Post -Harvest Handling
F. Multi-Story/ Agro-forestry Farming
G. Drainage & Irrigation
H. Organic Farming/Soil Fertility Management
I. Animal Healthcare / Livestock Production
J. Seed Processing & Storage
K. Marketing of Agricultural Products
L. Cooperative Formation & Strengthening

After the respondents had been empowered through the various trainings, they were given the opportunity to apply what they learned through the dispersal program which was also known as the Phase 2. This was one of the ways to start improving their livelihood and it involved handing off the following:

A. Native chickens
B. Rubber planting materials
C. Fruit and forest trees
D. Cassava planting materials
E. Vegetable seeds


Gawad Kalinga Bayani Challenge 2013

JRMSU-Katipunan Campus participated in the GK Bayani Challenge 2013 in Barangay Miatan, Katipunan, Zamboanga del Norte where a GK Subanen Village was established. The program that lasted for 5 days in March 23-27, 2013 was composed of five intensive activities such as: House Build, Farm Build, Paraisong Pambata, Green Kalinga, and Health Mission. The whole school (students, faculty members and staffs) participated in the activities in partnership with other stakeholders such as LGU, Philippine Army, Red Cross and other POs and NGOs. Volunteers from all walks of life extended their support to uplift the life of the barangay folks.

The program was able to serve more than 500 people in Barangay Miatan as well the neighboring barangays who were also welcome to avail the Health Mission.


Semestral Tree Planting

The Semestral Tree Planting Program is an extension program participated by the students and faculty members alike of the College of Agriculture. It aimed to plant trees in denuded mountains of different barangays of Katipunan, Zamboanga del Norte. The seedlings were composed of fruit and forest trees cultivated at the college nursery.


Farmers Scientist Training Program (FSTP) in Corn Production

FSTP in Corn Production was a program that involves lecture to producers/ farmers in the Municipality of Polanco, Zamboanga del Norte. The farmers where taught on how to conduct simple trial/ experiment on the variety of corn that was best suited for their area or farm in order to improve their productivity. The lectures were conducted by the faculty members of the College of Agriculture who are expert in corn production. This extension program was participated by 41 corn producers


Forest Enrichment Program

The Forest Enrichment Program aimed to fill in those planted trees that did not survived during the previous tree planting activities. This was participated by various sectors such as the Philippine National Police, Barangay Officials, NSTP students of JRMSU campus and the Department of Environment and Natural Resource who supplied the planting materials.
